Day 7: Who was the first villain you admired, even if only a little? Why?

I feel like the question is only about actual villains, not villains on the path of redemption that we start to admire because they did the right thing after an hesitation. (Otherwise: Mendoza in Mysterious Cities of Gold, and more surprisingly Rita (French name, I don't know the Japanese name) in Hikari no Densetsu)

For full villains: Milady in Les Trois Mousquetaires. I read it in middle school. Part of my interest in her was, and I absolutely didn't realize it at the time, because she's hot. But also she's incredible skilled and for both these reasons I've reread the part where she escapes by seducing her jailor dozens of times.
flo_nelja: (Default)
I'm skipping questions!

Day 6: Who was the first hero you wanted to be saved by? And from what would you need rescuing?
Bonus: Who's a hero you could save?

I remember vividly tiny!me having a fantasy once about She-Ra magically healing my cavities. Don't ask me. It wasn't even one of my fave shows.

I also remember, still as a kid but less tiny, that in Anastasia Krupnik Anastasia feels out outsider because she can't have a cool nickname ending with a y and I really wanted to tell her that etymologically Stacy is short for Anastasia.
flo_nelja: (Default)
Even more late! Full list is here!

Day 2: What show or movie would you like rebooted? Same premise and storylines, but all new actors, showrunners, writers, technology, and social awareness?

You know, I never say this, but a reboot of Animorphs with actually good CGI could be interesting.
flo_nelja: (Default)
One day late ^^
What show or movie original cast would you like to see reunite for an update - where the intervening time has passed and we're getting a view of where they are now along with glimpses on how they got there?

If the time has passed, I assume it's live action, not animation, where it would be easier to decide only 2 years have passed. Too bad, I'd love a Slayers movie.
Oh, you know, I wouldn't mind getting some news of the Middleman crew.
flo_nelja: (Default)
Day 16: Do you have a fandom that you follow - either regularly or casually - with little to no knowledge of canon?

I will reblog DC comics fanart - especially Harvey/Ivy or Steph/Cass - when I read few DC Comics about them about them and none about them interacting.

At one point, I would reblog frequently Night Vale quotes without being in the fandom, but now, I've listened to quite a lot of the episodes (still reblogging the quotes)

Oh, also, a long time ago, I read some Weiss Kreuz fic without knowing the fandom. Then I tried the canon (the tv version) and didn't like it.

Day 17: Do you prefer art, fic, or vids? Why? Bonus: If someone was to give you a fandom gift, what format would it be?

Aaaah I love all of them. Fic stays with me more, I think?
(If someone wants to make me a gift, fanart of my fic is still my favourite thing)

Day 18: Recall a time when two of your fandoms collided, at least in some way. For example, a song that you fell in love with from one fandom showed up in a second fandom.

I don't remember faces, and don't remember music very well, but I often have collisions with names.

For one time, I had a Michael-with-no-family-name that I loved both in The Magnus Archives and in The Good Place.

I had an embarrassing moment for, because they sounded the same, I mixed Sakura/Li (Shaolan) in Card Captor Sakura and Sakura/(Rock) Lee in Naruto in a shipping conversation.

Sometimes, it's just parallels. Like, we laughed a lot with a friend that the 10th episode of Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Yuri on Ice was "the episode when we learn they have interacted before". It's funny because these episodes are nothing alike.

Also, I don't know if it's a collision, but it's funny I have currently two fandoms about gay necromancers. ^^

Day 19: What is something that you associate with a character in fandom, but aren't sure if it's canon or fandom?

Hum, usually, when I mix fanon and canon in my head, I'm unfortunately not aware of it.

But there are quite a few cases where I'm like "is it heavy subtext that we're meant to read into, or are we, as a fandom, reading too much into this?"

Like, is it meant by the author that Bokuto from Haikyuu!! has ADHD?

In 7 Seeds, I think that Ryo has a crush on Ango and doesn't realize it (not easy with Summer A upbringing), is it what I'm meant to get from some other characters thinking it? Or am I meant to think "oh they're projecting" and believe that he only likes Kokuri and Matsuri?

Day 20: A random character shows up at your doorstep at dinnertime saying a friend sent them. Why did your friend send that person, how does it go, and what do you talk about?

* Aziraphale comes to my door. Crowley told him I had a big collection of fairy tales books featuring the devil (it's true). Crowley also did this to embarrass me because my apartment is not very clean and I have no tea.
* I think we can have a very civil conversations about the real origin of these tales, though.

Day 10: Drop your OTP or small ensemble from the fandom they're in into another fandom - how do they do?

I first thought about Jon/Martin. And I thought about throwing them in Canaan House in Gideon the Ninth. And damn, Jon would make a good necromancer. But Martin doesn't have the skill for a cavalier. Maybe Melanie would have? Or Daisy? Both dynamics would be very good.

And as I was thinking about necromancy, I thought: Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning in Canaan House? Damn, I didn't think about AUs with this fandom, until this meme came :-D

Day 11: What would make you leave a fandom, or prevent you from getting into it in the first place?

The canon disappointing me. Enough for me to stop reading, and therefore not being able to understand what the people still in fandom are talking about.

It happened with Bleach, Heroes, L'attaque des Titans...

Day 12: Who is someone that you share the most fandoms with?

Oh, good question. Do you weight the fandom by the importance of my participation, or do the small fandoms count the same?
If every small fandom counts, I think it's [personal profile] malurette. If the people need to be in my current big fandoms as much as the old ones, it might be monstersqueen or anysin on tumblr.

Day 13: Squicks - What are some things that squick you in fandom - not necessarily "icky", though it can be. From anything involving blood, to bad grammar.

Hmmm, first idea was the things I won't read, but it doesn't mean it squicks me. I have absolutely no interest in no-powers AU, but it's not exactly squicky to me. Just a total lack of interest.

So, let's say tropes that actively squick me: dystopias, magical age regression or rapid aging, cheating, epidemics and pandemics, emphasis on money problems, hair shaving, forced feminization (including on female characters who are tomboys). I have no idea why. I don't get squicked on far worse things.

Some reader insert fics because I take them to seriously, like "nooo, it's not me, I'm OOC, don't insert me into that fic".

Characters being written as any kind of bigots when there's no hint of it in the text. Characters being deprived of their canon skills and cleverness, be it as bashing or with affection "oh he's a himbo". Even justified by the plot I don't like it.

Day 14: What fandom broke your heart?

Tokyo Babylon, a long time ago. I enjoyed it.
Same for Les Misérables.
Having my heart broken is, to me, a good feeling, not the same as being disappointed.

Day 15: What fandom pairing took you over like Venom took over Eddie?

Bill/Ford from Gravity Falls. It has so many of my narrative kinks together, it's absolutely scandalous. I had never written more than one chaptered fic about the same ship before.
flo_nelja: (Default)
Day 6: What's a fandom that you wish had a bigger following?

Hyakki Yakoushou because maybe we would have full scantrads... I can dream...

Day 7: What's the longest time you've been in a fandom. Not necessarily your oldest fandom, but a fandom that you started and still continue to read/write/create content for in some way.

Hmmm, I wondered in the previous June Something post if Greek myth counted as a fandom. If so, I have never stopped.

I had my childhood obsession phase, my "there are so many cool modern plays about these characters - no I don't know what fanfic is" phase, my "OMG it's so gay" phase, my "I actually can use them in fandom memes" phase.

Day 8: Crack!fic - We all know it. What's your opinion of it, and if you want, show us an example.

Oh, you know. We all know it. I know it. But when I think about it it's hard to describe.
In a way, even when it's not meant to be an alternate universe, I think it's kind of one. Where the importance of consequences is very different than in canon.

Though of course, some canon I'm in have crack elements. Some arcs of Deadpool are some kind of crack version of the Marvelverse. In general, Deadpool works very well for crackfic as a fandom. Since just don't have to change the concept of the character, just to exagerate it. But does it still count as crack?

And you know, I will self-rec the Pokemon fic I wrote for a challenge: Problèmes de compréhension. The cracky part is 1) gratuitous slash, and 2) trying to translate what is obviously game mechanisms into the characters' life.

Day 9: Drop the cast of a fandom you follow into a reality tv show - who/what/why? If you need a list of reality TV show examples, click here.

* 7 Seeds characters would absolutely kill it at Survivor.
* I want to see Gideon and Harrow as a team in LEGO masters, just for the lol. Harrow would but the bone piece everywhere. It's her aesthetic.
* Haikyuu!! cast competing for American Ninja Warrior. Some are very good, and some are awful.
* The Magnus Archives cast in an alternate version of Big Brother where Elias sells their office shenanigans to tv and not only to his Eldritch Eye God.
flo_nelja: (Default)
[personal profile] malurette told me that you didn't have to start on the first of June! You just have to answer all the questions in June! So I can answer them today, and I'm not late :-D

Day 1: What's changed about your fandom life in the last 365 days?

* My main fandom for this year, The Magnus Archives, had its last episode.
* After a hiatus of about 15 years, my sister started writing fanfic and drawing fanart again! She invited me in her fandoms, I especially loved Haikyuu!!, the shônen manga about volleyball. Also I'm her beta! And I teach her how to tag on AO3!
* And of course I discovered new fandoms. I finished 7 Seeds and it was really good, and I'm enjoying The Locked Tomb Trilogy.

Day 2: You've got your OTP, you have to throw a third into the mix (from the same fandom), creating an OT3. Who is the OTP, and in your opinion, why would they make a perfect third for them? Bonus question: What about adding a third to your OTP from a different fandom? Who and why?

There is now a meme of this! here!
But if it's the first OTP I'm thinking about, hmmm
* The Magnus Archives, Jon/Martin. I'd add Elias for the awfulness.
* Gravity Falls, Bill/Ford. I'd add Dipper, not for the awfulness, it' already here, for extra awfulness
* Haikyuu!!, Kuroo/Kenma. I love Kuroo/Kenma/Hinata more than I should.
* Gideon the Ninth, Gideon/Harrow. Gideon will hate me if I add Ianthe, so maybe Alecto? I'll see after book three :-D

Day 3: What's a favorite, or at least memorable fandom meeting/interaction that you've had?

I remember a few years ago, I had a new colleague, who was a manga fan. I was happy. We had planned to see each other at an anime convention, and here I find her... at the same fanzine stand as a long-time Internet friend.

Cue three-way surprise "you two know each other?"

It was very fun.

Day 4: What are the origins of your penname/username?

Nelja means "four" in Finnish. It's the name of one of the geese in Nils Holgersson, one of my favourite childhood books, and I love how it sounds. So I gave the name to a character (a geeky fairy) who was meant to be a one-time NPC in a tabletop RPG session. The PCs loved her, so she bacame recurrent. I got attached to her and used her as a penname.

When it comes to writing or art, what is your source for ideas/inspiration? Do you just brainstorm? Rely on talking to others? Workshop? Or do you hang out in prompting communities?

These days I'm writing a lot of prompts for exchange communities. I'm also brainstorming and talking to others! But I'm doing it a lot, probably because I love the idea that at least one person will be very happy about it.

I should sometimes write my own ideas, though ^^

What is something you would love to read in a fandom, but haven't found yet?

Oh lots of things! That's the other reason why I'm doing exchanges. :-D
Some rareships that don't exist, some precise plots... I might have at once one for every fandom. Not to mention when the fandom itself is rare.
flo_nelja: (Default)
What is something you think fandom, as a whole, needs? Either literally, like a service, or figuratively, like a 'head slap'?

There was this project of database for books and canons in general, where people who had read them could tag them by content, and them people could make a search by content, like in AO3, to find ideas of things to read. It seemed super intéresting. tvtropes is good, but you can't find "I want to see every canon that has these three tropes, but not this one"

Watch this video (or just read the lyrics). What pairing does this song remind you of and why?

Hummm, no one in particular. Maybe some old school bad boy/good girl like Angel/Buffy? But he's not exactly a normal human.
flo_nelja: (Default)
What is something you consider headcanon that was never truly resolved in canon?

Ha, there are always headcanons I'm very attached to, but I always forget them when asked.

* Fullmetal Alchemist 2003: These version of homonculi are a distillation of the fatal flaw/twisted and dark motivation of the person trying to do the resurrection ritual.

* Gravity Falls: Bill and Ford organized a heist at one point to steal a ton of Bill effigies from the Northwest family.

* The Magnus Archives: The meat monster of episode 18 is Benjamin Carlisle.
flo_nelja: (Default)
How open are you about being in fandom to your non-fandom friends/family?

They know I write fanfics. They don't know what's in my fanfics :-D
Most often, they don't even know what I ship, though there are exceptions, when we share a tv show.

Because yeah, they're "non-fandom" but we're still talking about movies or books. I can also advertise "I wrote a LGBT fairy tale" book to about everyone. Is it fandom? I'm not sure.

Oh, and I was glad recently, because my sister started to draw fanart and write fanfic again, she had stopped for maybe 14 years!
flo_nelja: (Default)
Is there any fandom that you regret getting into?

Hmm, there are series I was very invested in that disappointed me (Bleach, Heroes), but I'm still glad of what I've producted for them. Oh, maybe Attack on Titan. I want to know how the plot ends now that I've started, but the politics annoy me so much that having started puts me into an unpleasant position (even still loving the femslash pairing and the non-binary mad scientist)

Besides deathfic, rape/non-con, what is something that, no matter the pairing, you nope out of when it comes to reading?

Omegaverse. Not being very original here. ^^
Dystopian AU in general. (Yes, to me, omegaverse is dystopian AU)
When I think about it, most mundane AUs too, except if it's very creative.
flo_nelja: (Default)
What is a kink that fandom introduced you to, and you said, "Yes, Please!"

Not an easy question, because I discovered the fandom quite late, i was already a young adult, and there were quite a few I had discovered before, in the canons themselves, or bad non-fandom porn.

But there are still two I can think about

* Sex pollen. Not generic aphrodisiacs, that only enhance libido and where I'm often confused the characters don't just masturbate it out, but actual magical sex pollen with complicated effects.

* Consentacles. Rape tentacles I already knew from hentai but the idea that it actually should be quite pleasureable in a consensual xeno relationship, yeah, I'm all for this!
flo_nelja: (Default)
What is something that has surprised you about a fandom? Like, you expected the main fandom pairing to be X/Y, but the main pairing in fandom is actually X/Z. Or a pairing you expected to be slashed together isn't very popular?

There were some ships that I didn't expect to be so popular, like Spike/Xander in Buffy, or Childermass/Segundus in Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell.

There were some ships that I loved, and expected to be popular and that are not, like Scar/Lust in Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 or Knives/Legato in Trigun

And there is the most frustrating variation: ships that I love, that I am surprised are not popular when I get in the fandom, and a few years later the fandom has shifted, now they're super-popular, but I'm less in them. (Enjolras/Grantaire in Les Misérables, Melkor/Sauron in Tolkienverse, Doug/Warlock in New Mutants)

What is your favorite celebrity interaction from any fandom you've had?

Author interactions are usually when I'm asking for a signature and are usually stressful because of social anxiety. At a comics convention, I chatted a bit with Cebulski, a minor author for Marvel comics, and he was nice, though! We talked about out favourite New Mutants characters and also of the level of control the editor has over the plot.
flo_nelja: (Default)
o5 - You get to fuck/marry/kill in one fandom. What's the fandom, and who in the fandom fits each item?

I will do The Magnus Archives, since it's my main fandom this day, but comment with any fandom or group of three characters, and I'll answer about them!

Fuck: Tim if I'm being reasonable, Annabelle otherwise
Marry: Georgie
Kill: Barring the already dead characters, Arthur Nolan I guess. I'm annoyed he's still alive
flo_nelja: (Default)
I've been blocked too long. I'm not doing day 2. I don't want to. I'm here to talk about fandom.

o3 - Who is the first character that you fell in love with?

I think it was McGyver. ^^
(I then was mercilessly mocked by my sister because he had a mullet)

o4 - If you were introducing your favorite fandom to someone new, what one episode would you make them sit down and watch?

My main fandoms have an ongoing plot and a good enough beginning, so I'd start with episode one.

One of the exceptions might be Doctor Who. But I already tried to make someone start with The Empty Child and it terribly backfired (I'm sorry)
flo_nelja: (Default)
What's a new fandom that you've fallen into since the last June Something/in the last year?

La passe-miroir (The Mirror Visitor in English). I expected to like them, not to want to fic on them. Double bonus!

I don't think I made any no-spoil presentation? So, let's go.

Post-apocalyptic future, but quite soft. Basically, the earth has been destroyed, except for about 20 floating islands, domains of "Family spirits", kind of gods who each saved a part of the human population. They also had kids with them, so most habitants of a given island are their descendants and have powers they got from them.

Ophélie is from Anima, the island where magic is linked to manufactured objects. She has two main powers: she is a "liseuse" (basically psychometry, she can know the past of an object by touching it), and she can jump from any mirror to another (not too far away though)

Ophélie manages her museum (psychometry is good for this), and she doesn't really want to marry, but the social structure on her island is so family oriented that she probably will have to. The surprise is that it comes as an arranged marriage with someone on another island, on the far north, where everyone has mind powers.

Because everyone, even the Family spirits, forgot how the world was destroyed and how it turned like this, and some people really want to know. And Ophélie's power can help them.

So, it has adventure (a bit - Ophélie is not very physical, but I love how her clumsiness is treated as a real disability and not a cute flaw), investigation, romance (for all the arranged marriage lovers here), a very good worldbuilding, plot twists, and I loved it a lot.

Representation seems weak in the first two volumes, but in the third and fourth it becomes far better.
