Femslash February, Day 22
Feb. 22nd, 2025 10:17 amUnder the cut is a scale of tragic ending, with my opinions, and spoilers for lots of fandoms.
I love tragedy. It doesn't mean I love all bad endings in fiction. So I tried to explain, with examples.
(It's explaining nothing. This is mostly about my tastes, not about good or bad writing)
So it looks like:
5: Perfect tragic ending, no notes (Souma/Kendappa, Baru Cormorant/Tain Hu)
4: It was so beautiful! Made the most sense probably. And still I wanted them to be happy! The option was almost here! (Rei/Nanako, Homura/Madoka)
3: They made it work I guess! Not the ending I would have chosen at all, but I was suitably moved and loved the tragic scenes (Talia/Susan, Sistah Spooky/Mindf**k)
2: I can see the artistic vision, but I personally disliked it (Willow/Tara, Root/Shaw)
1: Hated it, made no sense narratively, not even good emotionally (Eve/Villanelle)
(You can give me tragic femslash ships you know, if you want me to put them on the scale :D )

Date: 2025-03-24 08:11 pm (UTC)Homura/Madoka is such a bittersweet one for me, because while I loved the ending, I also cursed it. They'd suffered so much already and they were both so soft, the deserved to be happy!
Also, yeah, Willow/Tara really felt like a "bury your gays" moment. They would have needed way different built up for it to work for me.

Date: 2025-03-24 08:17 pm (UTC)To me Willow/Tara is not a Bury your gay exactly. It's written only for shock value, and it's fridging. I don't like those. But as the same already happened to straight women in the show (Jenny, Jovce), I see more plain misogyny than homophobia, if it makes sense?
But also, in most ships, "killing them just when they were happy" seems bad, but Willow and Tara had so much holes in their relationships that one dying for a brief reconciiation was both the best and the worst that could have happened to them, this irony I love.
