5 fics I read and loved in 2024
I didn't read a lot of fanfic this year (that's why three of them are literally gifts for me), but still enough for a selection!
dead flowers in the sand by glasslilies (Gideon the Ninth, Cytherea/Loveday, T, 2721 words)
Driven to insanity after trying to plant a bomb on a Resurrection Beast, Cytherea recovers on the Mithraeum and reminisces about Loveday.
Cytherea Loveday was retrieved from her deep-space shuttle and asked if she would need the mercy of a rapier’s point and a body bag.
She was babbling incoherently in an unholy tongue when they freed her from her coffin of metal and plex, squalling like an infant that had intuitively decided that it wanted to inflict permanent ear damage on everybody within a ten kilometre radius—but she supposed that she must have answered in the firm negative, because the next time Cytherea woke up, she was safely ensconced in blankets and bound to her bed while a dark figure with a smattering of rust on his scalp and jaw presided over her indisposed form.
Very poetic writing, very detailed analysis with the little we had, very touching.
the executioner's within me (sword in hand) by inkpoisonblood (Demon Slayer, Shinobu/Tamayo, T, 1270 words)
There is a calendar in the corner counting down days.
There is a time limit. There is a deadline. There is an Insect Hashira with poison for blood and wreckage for a heart, and eyes like moonlight on wisteria in full bloom. Killing herself slowly, but Tamayo cannot fault her for her rage when it’s something they both share.
She is ready to die.
or
the parallels between kochou shinobu and lady tamayo.
The ladies had a mad-scientists-forced-to-work-together arc and it was all offscreen, while it was exactly my thing, and I was dying to find a good fic for it, and I did! It's here!
Thaw by Enisy (Berserk, Guts/Griffith, EXplicit noncon, 2943 words)
“I thought I ought to touch you before the end. I ought to see for myself exactly what drove me out of my mind, in another life.”
The opposite of love is indifference, they say, but Griffith is not quite there yet.
This was a gift for me! The writing is icredible, and I love the way the unreliable narrator is used - the obvious, deep denial.
A Fall in Three Parts by RussetFiredrake (Cristabel (Coleridge), Christabel/Geraldine, Explicit noncon, 5355 words)
When Geraldine rides away, Christabel thinks perhaps she has escaped her thrall. Her hope only rises when her fiancé comes to marry her.
But she has not escaped. She may have never even come close.
You know the poem is unfinished? Someone wrote me an ending! It's dark, it's poetic, it's sensual, it's evil, it plays with mind control and the ambiguity of memories exactly how I love!
Precious by eye_of_a_cat (Lord of the Rings, Gollum+Sauron, T, 1483 words)
Gollum, the One Ring, and his captivity in Mordor.
So: a long-ago river.
So: a birthday present.
So: cruelly cursed and driven away, into the deeps of mountains for the secrets of things, hidden jewels and shining gold, all the world’s wonders.
Ask for it. Beg for it. Please please please.
His voice purrs like a cat. “What I do for you, little pet,” it says.
I love the bad guys in LotR and the Ring as a corrupting force, so I love gen about Gollum, and this one has interactions with Sauron that are incredible, not at all what I would have imagined but makes mythical sense.
4 fanvids I saw and loved in 2024
Wonderful World by MathildeWithAnE (Ghibli movies, PG)
It made me cry a bit in the end. T_T AO3 link here if you want to leave feedback.
LENT (on tumblr) ou on YouTube by potato-lord-but-not (The Magnus Protocol, T)
The Magnus Protocol fan animation that actually makes me feel like The Magnus Archives does.
nothing is safe (on tumblr) or on YouTube by jennaflare (Black Sails, M)
You know, I usually don't listen to hip-hop, but this fanvid made me judge myself for this choice, and also tore my heart out.
Ghost Pokemon - Halloween 2023 by ypandaanimation (Pokemon, PG)
Just an incredibly cool animation of all the Ghost Pokemons, that happen to be my faves.
3 crack things on the Internet that always make me laugh
French advertisements with English subtitles, about accidentally misunderstanding the subject of a movie. Napoleon gets eaten by a seal in it
AI generated short Batman script, from the time AI-generated script was of the so bad it's good variety
Willful misinterpretation of security symbols, by thefrogman
2 self-recs fics on mythological fandoms
Les enfants de l'acide (Mythologie grecque, Hestia, Hades, Demeter, Poseidon, Hera, T)
La vie des enfants de Cronos dans l'estomac de leur père, entre le moment où il les dévore et celui où leur frère les libère.
Siblings uniting against abusive parents is one of the themes I love and that's kind of personal. It's become more common to reference that part of their backstory in greek myth rewritings and I'm glad about it.
Lady Frigg's Quest (Norse Mythology, Frigg&Baldr, PG)
"Then Frigga exacted an oath from fire and water, from iron, and all other metals, as well as from stones, earths, diseases, beasts, birds, poisons, and creeping things, that none of them would do any harm to Baldur."
My attempt to write a one-line episode of Norse mythology as a kind of dark fairy tale.
One poem about the sea
In three languages, Spanish (the original), English and French, Mar by Federico Garcia Lorca
