Every eye is drilling into Melanie these days.
The feeling is probably irrational. At worst, she feels Elias' God, not Elias himself. Who certainly has other, more evil preoccupations.
Still, she wants to enucleate everyone looking at her on the street.
It's too many eyes to fear. People, even friends. Advertisement. Book covers. Her favorite plushies. This woman on her shampoo bottle, lascivious gaze on her.
It's almost better to face Elias directly, their gazes clashing.
But she looks at his suave, aristocratic (derogatory), insufferable face, and can only wonder.
Do her own eyes still belong to her?
