Fandom snowflake - Day 3

In your own space, put some favorite characters into an AU, fuse some favorite canons together, talk about your favorite AU/fusion tropes, or tell us why AU/fusions aren’t your cup of tea.

Ha ha, I don't read and write AU (except for canon divergence, but I feel like they aren't in the spirit of the question) or fusions often. I love to think about them! But it doesn't mean I get interested in writing them or reading them, even if I can argue about which Daemon/Pokemon Team/Eldritch Power a character feels like having, and pleasantly look at fanarts.

There's an exception, though, and it's fairy tale AUs. I love looking at my favourite ship dynamics and wonder in which fairy tale they should play the main roles, and sometimes, even, I read or write it, as crack or as a serious thing.
The fairy tales are so bare bones in terms of personality that if you choose the right characters they can stay exactly themselves :-D

Though I must confess I also have favourite fairy tales for this. The Snow Queen, The devil's daughter, Halewijn...
And I thought "Gideon and Harrow could totally play in The devil's daughter and then I thought "wait who would be who?" ^^

A good fairy tale AU can be a thing of beauty, can't it! And yes, it's wonderful when you see characters being exactly themselves and reacting to this strange new world or situation outside of their normal canon comfort zone.

Or maybe they're reacting like it's normal, maybe it's dream-like. But with their personalities that don't have anything to mix and match with. ^^

A lot of people have talked about cabin divergence in relation to not being part of our being different from AUs, and I'm kind of fascinated at the consistency of this, like there's a shared definition that I've completely missed somewhere. Do people think about AUs just as setting changes?

I think they're AU, just a particular sort of AU!
In other kinds of AU, things I can miss the most are the setting and the character backstories. With canon divergence, we get to keep all this!
In creating an AU, the question of "would the character have the same personality with a different backstory? what would be the changes?" are of interest for a lot of AU fans. Not for me.

Ah, okay. Thank you for clarifying. I'm interested in exactly the things that you've said aren't interesting to you.

It's also interesting to see where everyone has their exceptions, too.
