flo_neljaDay 11: Favorite Shoujo Villain/Rival
Yeah! Let’s start with an old one I have loved since forever. It is a shoujo? In original anime it’s never easy to tell. It feels like one.
Favorite Villain in an anime that feels like a shoujo : Folken (Escaflowne)
Tragic well-intentioned extremist are so much my type, and this one was personally kind in addition. I was fully on his side in the end (unfortunately the writers were not).
(I wish I could say more. I haven't rewatched Escaflowne for ages)
Favorite Villain in a legit shoujo : Soo-won (Akatsuki no Yona)
At the beginning, he didn’t interest me that much as a character: more as a way to hurt my beloved Yona with FoeYay, a dark mirror who has such a similar motivation (avenging a father, and the good of the people, which is more important) but does very different things with it, and also as a reflection of what is a legitimate heir anyway.
But as time passes, they have so many of these “forced to ally against a common enemy” arcs that I love so much. Where on the one hand, you’re happy about it, because together they can win against anyone, and on the other hand you know he can use the opportunity to do something manipulative.
Also, I’m enjoying more and more the FoeYay on his side too. On Yona’s side, it’s clear: she was very much in love with him, he betrayed her, she got over him, I’m happy for her. But him, did he really like her this way too? If so it’s clear it wouldn’t have changed anything. Or he could pretend for Reasons. He totally could.
Bonus: Favorite Villain in a shoujo adaptation of a book: Valmont and Merteuil (Shishaku Valmont - Kiken na Kankei / Les Liaisons dangereuses)
I have nothing to add other than: I adore these seductive, manipulative assholes who are all at the same time exes, old friends and enemies. And the manga really does good by them.
