Day 9 of female-centered stories with canon wlws!

The Handmaiden (in English) / Agassi (in Korean) by Park Chan-wook

HandmaidenDW.jpg

Length: One movie, about 2h20, 2h40 for the long version.

Happy ending or not? Yes for the main f/f romance and only for them.

Who is the wlw? The two main characters, Sook-hee and Hideko.

Is there other representation? It's historical, about Korean life under Japanese rule.

Warnings? Themes of torture, death, suicide, child abuse, attempted rape, some consent issues in general. Lots of sexual content. Moral ambiguity everywhere.

What about the plot? Sook-hee is a young pickpocket who gets hired as a handmaiden for a con: she must convince her mistress Hideko, who lives with her tyrannical uncle, to marry a Japanese count, who is actually part of the plan and only wants her fortune.
And then it gets a lot more complicated.

How good it is? I loved it! First, it was aesthetically beautiful. Second, the "here to betray someone but catches feelings" trope is one of my very favorites and I loved the romance. And also, I really loved the plot twist, the way the same scene changes with a few more minutes and a different point of view.
I must say I haven't read the book it's adapted from (Fingersmith by Sarah Waters), even if I have seen it recced so many times. I heard it has even more plot twists.
