Femslash February Challenge: Day 11
Day 11 of female-centered stories with canon wlws!
Lost Girl by Michelle Lovretta
Length: TV show, five seasons, 77 episodes of about 45 minutes.
Happy ending or not? The world is saved, most characters live, some don't. It really depends on who your favourites are. Bo ends up in a f/f relationship which happened to be my main ship so I was happy.
Who is the wlw? The main character, Bo. The human doctor who specializes on fairies, Lauren. A few other characters who are not on the pic, some good, some bad.
Is there other representation? On the main cast, Hale is black, Trick has dwarfism.
Warnings? Fantasy violence and death. Mind control and sometimes big consent issues, as the main character is a succubus who's feeding from sexual energy.
What about the plot? Bo was raised by human parents. She never knew she was a fairy (a succubus, but every supernatural creature, from werewolves to greek gods, are fairies in this world). She doesn't know why her lovers fall ill and die.
As she arrives in town, she discovers her heritage. At least, part of it, her full genealogy is a mystery for the whole show. She has to choose between the "Dark" and "Light" side of fairies and discovers that even if the Light ones are meant to be the good guys, she likes neither of them.
She instead takes an apartment with a human, and is neutral enough to be kind of an impartial investigator.
How good it is? It's very much a guilty pleasure.
I love that the heroine is shamelessly bi and poly, and how sex positive it is in general.
I love that she has mind control powers (with a bit more shame about it)
I love that despite her sexual orientation she has a female straight best friend with absolutely no sexual or romantic ambiguity on either side.
I love the research the writers did about fairies and different supernatural creatures. Also, it's very fun.
BUT sometimes the plot misses something on fact continuity and emotional continuity, and it has this thing where the end of each season is meant to be so big and when the next one starts it's just not that big, and also, it doesn't bother me but it's quite kitsch. And of course, you need to have no problem with sex scenes on TV.
