New fandoms meme
So, I'm not talking about my fandoms enough, and we could be in the same fandom and not now, that's why I'm doing this meme again
Here are the fandoms I got into last year:
* The Summer Hikaru Died
* Succession
* Gradalis
* Nevermore
* Blue Eye Samurai
* Hazbin Hotel + Helluva Boss
* The Magnus Protocol
* Undead Girl Murder Farce
* Lady Snowblood
* Dead Boy Detectives
* For all Mankind
* Dungeon Meshi
If you're in them too and want to talk about them, I'll answer these questions:
1) The reason I started it
2) Since when I knew it existed
3) Since when I was interested
4) If I'm interested in fanfic/fanart
5) If I'm tempted to write about it
5') And about what
6) Favorite characters
7) Favorite ships
8) Favorite parts
9) Why I would rec it
10) One of its biggest flaws
You can also ask me a fandom you just discovered if you know I was already in it, of course:
Je peux aussi le faire en français si c'est mieux
1) Pourquoi j'ai commencé
2) Depuis quand je savais que ça existait
3) Depuis quand j'étais intéressée
4) Si je suis intéresséee par les fanfic/fanart
5) Si je suis tentée d'écrire dessus
5') Et sur quoi
6) Personnages préférés
7) Ships préférés
8) Parties préférées
9) Pourquoi je le recommanderais
10) Un de ses plus gros défauts

I would like to hear about Dead Boy Detectives (which I recently saw and loved) and The Magnus Protocol (which I plan to listen to but did not do it yet)

Dead Boy Detectices:
1) The reason I started it
2) Since when I knew it existed
3) Since when I was interested
So, in the third season of Doom Patrol, like two or three years ago, there was a story where Edwin, Charles and Crystal were characters of the week. I shipped Edwin/Charles instantly. I only knew them from this Sandman chapter (that I had not a strong memory of), I had avoided every spinoff of Sandman (Lucifer, The Dreaming, and yeah Dead Boy Detectives too, and were there others? I don't know - I was thinking they were probably commercial) So it was my first real knowledge of the characters.
When the tv show was announced (I heard about it on Neil Gaiman's tumblr), I was like. I want more stories about them, that's sure. But on the other hand if it's less gay than the Doom Patrol version I might just cry.
(It was not less gay than the Doom Patrol version. The two interpretations of the character dynamics and stories are surprisingly close actually. I think there are people involved in both. The casting changed, of course. Well, not fully, the Night Nurse is the same. Among the creators I saw Shoshana Sachi's name in both openings, maybe there are others but she has a memorable name)
4) If I'm interested in fanfic/fanart
Yesss though I don't know, I haven't delved into the fanfics yet, even if I'm interested to. I might need recs. For now I'm trying to find the comics (yes you can mock me). It's not the same. Well they're 13 in the comics.
But also, yes, I have looked at fanart. On purpose :D
5) If I'm tempted to write about it
5') And about what
I'm not sure. I have written a drabble for the Pride themes, because it fell right, but am I motivated for myself? I ship Edwin/Charles very hard. I'm afraid to get them wrong. I'm not sure I even understood the worldbuilding rules.
6) Favorite characters
Edwin and Charles because I'm boring. Niko too.
7) Favorite ships
Edwin/Charles because I'm boring, again, and because I imprinted on a version where I didn't even realize Charles/Crystal was meant to be a thing ^^
8) Favorite parts
All of episode 7.
9) Why I would rec it
The thing is, I'm not sure it's good? I love supernatural investigation, I love queer themes, I was invested in the main ship before it even started, it was sure I would love it so I can't even tell if it's good. I'm just surfing on the obsession.
10) One of its biggest flaws
Objectively it's teen (?) romantic drama all over, I probably would be annoyed by it if it was not queer?
Also, them not knowing if there's a season 2 or not made them cut short "what happens to Niko after death", which, in a show so fully about what happens after death, is quite frustrating.
In general, I wish the worldbuilding was clearer about a lot of things.
The Magnus Protocol :
1) The reason I started it
2) Since when I knew it existed
3) Since when I was interested
The second I heard of the project (by the Rusty Quill Patreon) I was interested, and gave them some money. And I'm not even following all the Rusty Quill series! Podcasts are hard for me! But I had loved TMA that much.
4) If I'm interested in fanfic/fanart
I've looked at fanart regularly! Not especially fanfics yet. For now I trust the show to be about the points where I want more.
5) If I'm tempted to write about it
5') And about what
I was not, but I had a prompt meme about tattoos and I ended up writing a drabble about the canon-typical evil tattoos.
6) Favorite characters
Colin is my fave, and he's not a main character like I had hoped, and it kills me.
7) Favorite ships
I have nothing I'm deeply invested in, but Gwen/Lena has potential.
8) Favorite parts
I love all the arc about the dead people talking. And their kind of stream of consciousness post-death stories.
9) Why I would rec it
I would rec it to all people whose fave part in TMA was dark supernatural office comedy, because it has a lot more of this! Also, the worldbuilding makes me very curious again :D
10) One of its biggest flaws
Hmm, I can't say why, but I don't like it as much as TMA and I don't think I will? Though it's a weird feeling to have, I have listened to 20 episodes, I wasn't deeply invested in TMA after 20 episodes. But we had a lot more character development and I love them less.
(This is not a flaw, this is just me. But I feel like writing is more unequal too)

It drives me mad that we have no clear rules about
* How do ghosts' sense of touch work, if they ever have one, what can they feel and what can't they? (come on it's ghost romance, that should be one of the points)
* How do ghosts picking up objects work? How do you skip from you pick up some scissors and humans see them move in the air, to you pick up scissors and they become part of your inventory and as invisible as you are?
Seriously the main characters know this! They would gladly explain if asked! Some characters would be very interested to know! It's plot-relevant! They have no excuse not being clear about it!
(also I did some soul searching and decided that I was totally able to get obsessed by it if it was not queer, I'm not that biased. Source: I got kind of obsessed with Lockwood & co about one year ago, which is het teen romantic drama with ghosts)

I think it is good, at least! And I came to it in quite the opposite way to you. I never heard of Dead Boy Detectives or Doom Patrol, and only vaguely heard of Sandman. Never even saw someone mention Dead Boy Detectives on dreamwidth or anything like that. And usually I don't like teen supernatural drama. But I just randomly clicked on the Dead Boy Detectives in Netflix without knowing what it was, and quickly got hooked. And that was even before I realized how queer it is! (I did see it was tagged LGBT, but sometimes they do that just for some small background character or something.) So I think objectively it is pretty good!
I hope there is a second season!

Do you have headcanons about the worldbuilding questions I have?

How do ghosts' sense of touch work, if they ever have one, what can they feel and what can't they? (come on it's ghost romance, that should be one of the points)
Yes, exactly! I read some fan fics and of course, everyone has a slightly different interpretation because we have no canonical info or some contradicting canonical info (I mean, I think Charles says something about not being able to feel Crystal's kiss. But they never seem to have any problem, turning the pages of books or whatever, or any of the other things that are difficult to do when your fingers are numb.)
How do ghosts picking up objects work? How do you skip from you pick up some scissors and humans see them move in the air, to you pick up scissors and they become part of your inventory and as invisible as you are?
I actually didn't think about this at all! It is so rare that we see them from the point of view of someone who doesn't see ghosts.
I also wondered about the disguises. I didn't understand how that worked. Like, they can become visible, but only if they are in disguise? But why can't they just wear a "disguise" that is identical to their actual appearance? Then Crystal wouldn't have to go around looking like she was talking to her herself all the time...
no subject
Edwin textually says, in episode 7, can touch things, can't actually feel them.
Except at this point he's just back from hell where dead people sure can feel things.
I'd say "can't touch thing" is short from "can't feel pleasure or pain from it", even if yeah, it's not actually fully numb.
Though "they look like touching but they actually do it with their mind" works too.
But even for the kissing, I think it doesn't match Edwin's reaction to Monty or the Cat King flirting, you know? Him never mentioned I did/could barely feel anything physical.
(for the Cat, you could say, yeah, maybe it's only the human/ghost rule, and with other supernatural creatures you feel it. But he believes Monty is human at this point)
But why can't they just wear a "disguise" that is identical to their actual appearance? Then Crystal wouldn't have to go around looking like she was talking to her herself all the time...
It's possible they don't design the disguises? They buy them in a magic shop like Mick's and there are limited choices. Or they were given them as payment, and once again, they were specific.
But yeah it's not clear. Ghost economy isn't clear in general (and my question about picking up objects are just a part of it)

I think I am not so bothered about the ghost inventory question because it doesn't come up so much in the show nor in fanfic, unless someone is to write a fic from the POV of someone who doesn't see ghosts.
I think the show is not consistent about it anyway. Because you remember there is that scene where one of them makes a pair of scissors walk along the table to threaten someone? Only the scissors are visible. Meanwhile, of course, their clothes are not visible... I guess it's supposed to be like that they can control what is inside and outside their "invisible inventory"?
For the sense of touch, I like best the version where Edwin and Charles can touch each other as two alive humans can, even if human/ghost touch is "numb". Because of course that headcanon is the one that works the best for Charles/Edwin smut! ;D
no subject
Ha yeah. As I was saying, there's quite an importance on being paid and buying things in magic shops, I think it wouldn't be that important if they could just pick up something and say, it's mine now.
I would like some smut also, I won't lie. But it's frustrating that I'm always wondering, does it work? Can they actually do this?
